CDM Tip: How to Force Universal Mac Apps to Run PowerPC Plug-ins

universal_smbadge.gifPeter Kirn of CDM shares a good tip with Mactel users.

So, you decided to spring for that Intel Mac. And now you’ve got a plug-in that refuses to run, because it’s PowerPC-only, not a Universal Binary for Intel. Sorry, but only plug-ins that have been updated as Universal Binaries will run in a Universal audio host. Fortunately, there’s away around it, and it’s even fully documented by Apple:

Intel-based Macs: Forcing a Universal application to run with Rosetta [Apple Support Doc]

That’s it. You force your audio application to run under Rosetta, as a PowerPC-native application. During the period when I had a MacBook Pro for testing, I was surprised to discover audio applications are usable. Performance is degraded — your Core Duo suddenly feels like a 400 MHz G4 (apologies to Titanium owners) — but they run. My advice: render any of those old plug-ins as audio, then reload; in Ableton Live, for instance, temporarily force the software to run in Rosetta, bounce the track with the plug-in you need, then re-load Universal and play the audio. Not the most elegant solution, but it’ll get you by.

groovetool for OS X

screenshotinit.gifgroovetool is a stand alone utility designed specifically for computer musicians (like us) who are looking to put a little feel into their drum tracks. The creators of this product are not software developers, but real music producers.

groovetool works by setting up a simple 16 note bar, allowing you to offset the timing of notes in a fast, friendly way. The program then creates a small midi part which can drag directly onto most popular sequencers. Now visible in your favorite sequencer, the midi part can quickly be converted to a quantize template for your drum patterns.

Izotope Radius for Logic

logic.jpgiZotope, Inc. have announced the release of iZotope Radius for Logic, a version of their high-end time stretching and pitch shifting algorithm built for Apple’s Logic Pro. iZotope Radius for Logic integrates directly into Logic Pro’s Time Machine and offers a separate application for control of additional parameters.

iZotope Radius allows for independent control over timing and pitch of any audio material while preserving the character and acoustic space of the original recording. Using an advanced hybrid method, it is able to preserve transients and sustained material simultaneously, making it extremely useful for modifying fully mixed performances as well as individual instruments, voices, or other audio sources.

Because Radius is designed for completely transparent operation on a wide variety of source material, iZotope tell us that it is well suited for many applications in video post production, music production, sound design, and home audio.

Price and Availability
iZotope Radius for Logic is available for purchase directly from iZotope for $399.99 USD.
